What is Computer?



Here we will talk about what is a computer and how does a computer run. In simple language, a computer is an electronic device. It is commonly used for calculation. You all already know this answer. So you must be thinking that today why this article, this article about which we already know everything.


Just wait. I want to tell you what a computer is, maybe you already know about the computer but my motive is that you should have complete knowledge of computer, not half of it. The computer that we are able to use today is the result of years of work of many scientists and I think that you should have the complete knowledge about the computer.
So let's start and know what a computer is.

What is Computer?


The word computer has been derived from the "Greek/Latin" word "Compute" which means to calculate.
So we can say that computer is a calculating machine but nowadays computer become very powerful and versatile. So we can say that 
    "Computer is software based, High speed, electronic machine that accepts data process on it and gives us important information as output."

Limitations of Computer.

Computer is a brainless machine that has no power to think. So it cannot make its own decisions like human beings. Each and every functions of computer is depend on the programs and instructions given by us. 

Types of Computer.


  • Types of computer on the basis of function.

In this category there are following types of computer.

1.     Digital Computers: - Digital computers store data in digital form. A digital computer counts the data in digital form.

2.     Analog Computers: - Analog computers are used to measure the Temperature, Air pressure, Speed etc. Analog computers work on measuring rather than counting.

3.     Hybrid Computers: - Hybrid computers have the features of both Digital and Analog computers. They work on both digital and analog data.

  • Types of computer on the basis of their size, performance and configuration.


In this category there are following four types of computer.

1.     Micro Computers; - These are the smallest, cheapest and general purpose computers. These are single user system that allows only one user to work at a time. These are general purpose computers which performs various types of functions. These are also called Personal Computers (PC). Micro computers are further divided into desktop, laptop etc.

2.     Mini Computers: - Mini computers are more powerful than micro computers. It is multi user system that allows multiple users to work at a time.

3.     Main frame Computers: - These are more powerful than micro and mini computer. They can store a large amount of data perform a very complex operation at very high speed. These computers are used as a main computer of a computer network, in a very large industries and organisations.

4.     Super computer: - These are the most powerful computers of the world. These Computers are designed to perform very complex and special operation. Super computers are used in rocket launching, whether forecasting like scientific and complex application.

  • On the basis of use 



In this category there are following two types of computers.

1.     General purpose: - These Computers are design to perform various general operations as Micro Computers.

2.     Special purpose:-These computers are used for a very special work as Super Computer.
